Shabby End Table, Dixie belle chalk paint and vintage wall paper to shabby chic Cute!

Sometimes you just cannot pass up a good deal, this was one of those times!

Great little table love the bow front and sweet drawer.

The top has seen better days.

I started this project with sanding. A 220 grit sand paper to start with a finished it up with 400 to 600 and a final rub down with steel wool.
My go to tools are Ryobi orbital and detail sanders.   Battery powered and I am amazed at how long these batteries last!

I choose Dixie Bell Sand Bar because it matched the colors in the wall paper well.
This was a super easy project.  It tool 3 thin smooth coats and I sanded lightly between each coat with 0000 steel wool. This sanding step between coats will make your finished texter smooth as glass.  I top coated with Min Wax finishing paste in natural.  I put two coats on the top buffing to a hard finish and lightly sanding with steel wool.  It feels like glass.!

The interior of the drawer I hit with a little bit of left over blue grey primer, sanded with steel wool and waxed it with Min Wax finishing paste wax in natural.

I cut the wall paper to fit in the back and sides on the bottom.  I modge podged only the back of the paper , placed it in to the recessed back and sides , smoothed out as may bubbles as I could and let it dry.  Done, wall paper does not require a top coat.

This is not a perfect piece of furniture but sure is cute.  Perfect as a bed side table in a little girls room or a side table in the 4 season room.

Blessings to you and Happy Mothers day!

Shabby side table upcycle rub ons, dark wax and and milk paint

This little table was too cute and well "cheaply Priced" to not take a chance on.  I cold see the potential if you like shabby French style.  The little table had clearly stood the test of time well worn with a few more years still left in it.  I started by just cleaning it well and giving it a light sanding.

I mixed a small amount of Miss Mustard Seed type writer black milk paint applied it then rubbed it back. It sat and dried over night.  I did not paint the card board back I have a plan for it.

After it was completely dry I applied a combination of clear or natural Min wax with Annie Sloan dark wax.

Here is a tip that works for little shabby projects that perfection is not a must.  I put a chunk of clear wax in my dark wax container.

This makes mixing very easy.  I find that dark wax mixed with clear is a lot easier to blend.  If I do not want a lot of dark I just load my wax brush from the clear island.
This technique came in very handy to finish the brown paper backing I put on the bottom back of this piece.

Simple application with modge podge on the back and a brayer to smooth out the bubbles.  When it completely dried (overnight)  I applied waxes and the paper feels like leather and will accept rub ons.

Perfectly imperfect!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

metal mess to shabby Fab. Metal Cabinet up cycle make over using chalk paint

I have had this little hospital metal  bedside table for a year.  I purchased it last year with a lot of furniture at a yard sale.  It had contact paper on the top that had been spray painted a few times.  Needless to say it stayed.  The interior was dirty and rusty in places and the knobs were wooden ones that have see much better days.  I will not lie to you I put this cabinet off because wow what a lot of work to undo all that was done to it.  Then it hit me I am going to try to undo all of this so that I can work twice as hard to distress it again.
NAWwww.
The contact paper was not going any where it was stuck and sealed with two coats or more of spray paint.  The knobs came off, I have been stashing a set with it to replace them, and the rubber feet were pried off.  I had a set of round caps that fit in the holes of each foot problem solved.  I resorted to Annie Sloan Chalk paint Coca. I needed adhesion and this paint delivers.  Every time I purchase that pricey stuff I remind myself it is worth with a project like this.  The interior was also an easy fix.  I had some vintage sheet music and Modge Podge.

I Love the results!  Nope this is not a perfect cabinet.....

However what charm! It has stood the test of time.  It has been moved from storage building to storage building and luckily was not Discarded.

Mental note on the knobs....

These were purchased from Pier One .  They have wonderful designs in hardware however I am not impressed with the mounting screw.  It is long and hard to keep tight and runs through the ceramic knob itself.
Once I had  the nut on the back of the screw close to the cabinet I applied some E6000 Glue and snugged it up.  Not too tight that screw runs through the knob and too tight may break the ceramic.  I then took the dremel with cutting disk and cut the excess off after the glue set overnight.   I have found with the cutting disk on the dremel the cut is smooth.  You can use the disk to remove any burrs.  So if you accidentally run your arm across the screw reaching in it will not cut you.

I am glad that you stopped by!

This is for the birds... cabinet Upcycle using chalk paint and Bird Prints

I am very pleased with this little project.  I found this little cabinet at a yard sale and could not pass it up a great deal and real wood .  It was a well used item kids had colored on the inside and it had some water damage .

I am sure it was intended to look like an old ice box.

I broke out the Southern Honey  chalk paint and took care of the exterior

I had a lone bird knob I picked up on the clearance rack at World Market.

And for the inside to avoid bleed through of markers and crayons and to avoid having add a sealer before painting (I am a LAZY crafter) ........

Modge Podge and a worn bird book with wonderful plates of art work in it, were my solution....
Drawers and Doors were also covered.....

I do like the out come except for the natural wood on the inside of the door....and it was painted an off white just did not grab another snap shot.  It was a much needed improvement!

A fun and quick project!  So the next time you walk up on a pretty little number with some kiddy art work on it think Modge Podge.......

Kids step stool up cycles

I love an easy project and the two I am about to feature are super easy....

They started out with two shabby children's stools and a vision...

I have gotten ahead of my self and started both before I took photos.  However you get the shape they were in.

I plugged the holes with wood putty on the two stepper and the other I wiped clean.
I never pass up the book section in the thrift store and will at least glimpse in to the yard sale box of books.  Vintage children's books offer up some of the sweetest art work.
Both of these stools were modge podged with vintage children's book pages.  No worries they were both in very rough shape so using the salvageable pages did not entail destroying a book.

I was lucky and found pages that had great corresponding colors.

On the two stepper I stenciled the tops of the stools using a  Martha Stewart stencil. ( I picked it up at Joann's with a 40% off coupon)It was around 5 bucks.  I used a make up sponge to stencil with.  WOW...what a great effect easy to apply and the coverage was even.  The next time you see some for cheap pick them up they turned out to be a great stencil tool.
SOLD
Of course I sanded distressed added some black paint to the edges and then put two coats of wax on the steps and one coat on the stool body.
The second stool I simply modge podged the top with a cool book picture of a peacock.  When the top had dried over night I put two coats of quick dry poly (with drying time between) and sanded with fine steel wool to knock a bit of the shine off...
The body of the stool I just cleaned off with a damp cloth and waxed with paste wax to preserve the chippy goodness.
I can envision so many uses for these items...beside a chair to hold that stack of magazines...of course in the bath for a step up to the sink..or even a center piece for that next baby shower...

I hope this has inspired you to see that next shabby little stool in a different light.
