Foot Locker chest up cycle using chalk paint, maps and Decoupage

On the same excursion that the tables were found so was this foot locker.  It was priced right, in good shape and had the original key.  Who can pass that up?

The interior had the tray and it was in nice shape as well.  Some of the paper had started to peel but structurally it was nice and sound.

I elected to add a layer if primer .  I was not using Annie Sloan full strength.   I added some latex blue to some old white and wow what a great color...

I will admit that I may not have needed the primer because distressing this was hard work. The paint did not want to let go!

The final step to the outside was to wax.  And here is what I used:

I lucked up and found a full can of SC Johnson paste wax at the Goodwill a few months back.  The brush is by plaid and is a large wax brush.  It retails for 19.99 I had a 40 % off coupon making it roughly 12.99.  I like the brush.  I does what it says applies even wax on different surfaces and cleans up wonderfully with dish soap and water.  I have purchased another one and it is used for dark wax only.   Johnson paste is very very easy to use.  It hardens and gives a glass like feel.  It is affordable even new.  I like the fact that this wax does not seem to soften as easily in diverse temperatures.  Annie Sloan wax in my opinion does soften and become sticky when exposed to heat.  I have a booth that this will go into .  The owner does not run the air at night so the building can heat up.  Johnson paste wax will remain hard.

The end handles were rotted and one was missing.  I had some sisal rope that was in a basket kit and it made some nice handles.

I needed to address the inside.  I still have maps so maps it is.

Modge podge is a time consuming method and is messy.  However it is also sorta Zen ...relaxing and the progress is instant.  This is a big job requiring a lot of glue.  I mixed my own modge podge with Elmer's Glue all (A huge Jug 128 oz at Lower was 14.99  Wood glue you can use,it will dry stiffer) and water.  2 parts Glue 1 part water.  Here is mental note:  The paper process is wet pulp that is strained pressed and dried to into paper.  Wetting it reverses the process. The thinner and older the paper the more fragile it is.  Make sure that you are prepared to work quickly if using old paper.  You also may want to back your water off when mixing your modge podge.  This project called for less water.  The maps that I used were dated before the 1990's and map paper is not always good paper.  You may want to consider cutting the large sheets and working them back together on your surface .  You can control the air bubbles a little easier.  And make sure that you hands are wet if you are touching tacky glue.  If you hands are dry the paper Will stick to you and lift off of your project making a mess.

The final process is DRYING.  The Sun on the new deck came in handy this day.

I hope that you have a wonderful day and thanks for stopping by.

Shabby well traveled storage Vintage suitcase up cycle using decoupage and Clear coat

I am not a stranger to revamping an old suitcase or train case.  I am also no stranger to finding a different use for a suitcase, However I can not find a better use then the trending practice of using them for storage.  I found these little Jewels in a local thrift store for  2.50 each...Yep you cannot pass that up even though they were in gnarly shape I felt there was hope.

They appeared to be from the 1940's or before one was just a card bard carry case the other was a much more high end case that may have some sort of lizard skin covering. The stress and years on them equaled them out.

The cardboard case had a stress tear on the top I approached it with modge podge smoothing it out n letting it dry .  I also sealed the damage from the inside using modge podge. When the damaged area was close to dry I hid it with some really neat book pages from a 1960's writing book.

The end results I am very pleased with.  What a great storage case a perfect fit on top of that stack in the house...

The next case was a bit more of a challenge.  It was literally dry rotted and flaking off....The interior all though neat was also dry rotted .

And I approached it with modge Modge as well.   A good gooey coat and ran it under the peeled areas and let it dry completely.  Then I used Rustoleum Ultra Cover Gloss (it protects and dries realativly hard) to protect the outer case.  I applied several coats, allowing it to dry until not sticky, concentrating on the edges and damaged areas.

the inside was removed and I turned to old map pages and Modge Podge...
SOLD
The end results even I think are stunning...How unique!  A warm funky completey utillitarian piece of art work.

This was a fun and challenging project.  So the next time you see that tired case at an unbeatable price pick it up ..There is HOPE.
Thank you for stopping by!

Shabby little caddy Utensil silverware storage up cycle using chalk paint and the Silhouette Cameo

I am sure that I am not the only thrifter to pick an item up because it is only .50 cents.  This caddy is one of those finds.  It was in wonderful shape a little out dated and the perfect project to break out the Silhouette.

Before just a plain ole wooden caddy.

I am a lazy crafter so I taped it off so that I would not have to deal with the interior.  Painted it with Jackson (black) by Southern Honey and the stencil was with Nanny White by Southern Honey.

After a few coats of paint and stencil a buffing and distressing with sand paper.  I finished the caddy up with Johnsons Paste wax.  This is a great wax for signs and items like this.  I have used it on table tops but applied a few coats.  On the Caddy and signs that I make I simply use one coat.

SOLD

Not to bad for a .50 cent investment.  Here's a hint...I have found that with most latex chalk base paints they are thick.  To make the brush marks melt away I spritz the surface with water then brush on paint.  It really makes a difference in the finish you get.
Hope you have that .50 cent find just waiting for a transformation.

This is for the birds... cabinet Upcycle using chalk paint and Bird Prints

I am very pleased with this little project.  I found this little cabinet at a yard sale and could not pass it up a great deal and real wood .  It was a well used item kids had colored on the inside and it had some water damage .

I am sure it was intended to look like an old ice box.

I broke out the Southern Honey  chalk paint and took care of the exterior

I had a lone bird knob I picked up on the clearance rack at World Market.

And for the inside to avoid bleed through of markers and crayons and to avoid having add a sealer before painting (I am a LAZY crafter) ........

Modge Podge and a worn bird book with wonderful plates of art work in it, were my solution....
Drawers and Doors were also covered.....

I do like the out come except for the natural wood on the inside of the door....and it was painted an off white just did not grab another snap shot.  It was a much needed improvement!

A fun and quick project!  So the next time you walk up on a pretty little number with some kiddy art work on it think Modge Podge.......

Will Travel Again! train case make over using maps

I love to find these little train cases.  The older the better!
These two were wonderful on the outside.  A warm faux leather in a wonderful worn brown (with the key!) and a mod blue with enough wear to give it that vintage feel that we love.

The insides are normally in pretty rough shape.  Both of these cases were  torn and dirty inside.

I decided the best way to tackle these were to remove all the inner linings and get all the dust and loose debris out.
I broke out the modge podge and the Old print of the Great World Atlas.  The book has some issues so it is getting up cycled .

These cases are now ready to travel again or make great storage alternatives.

So glad that you stopped by!
Have a great day!
