Industrial cabinet make over Awesome Kitchen Storage...organization

You do not find metal drawer cabinets that often and when you do they can be quiet pricey!  So when I found this one for under 20 bucks...even though it's drawers missing I snatched it up!

The Plan:  Kitchen Storage

It was in nice somewhat clean shape.  I used a mixture of rubbing alcohol and a Mr. clean sponge to get the heavy marks off and to sanitize the drawers...

IT worked beautifully !

The pen and sharpie marks are gone...the normal wear I am not that worried about.
I elected not to paint it because, I like the industrial color and could not think of another color I would rather have.

I now had to deal with the missing drawers.  I thought about baskets or custom made slide in wooden drawers then it hit me.  I have pets and am not as young as I used to be .."will I really use the lower drawers?"  So a kick plate it was.  I had some great aged scrap in the stash at the woman cave and asked Mr. RTI to help me measure and to cut it the size. I needed
To give the cabinet "balance" so I also added a piece of maple from my Dad's Shop for a top.

The next step was deciding what I was going to store in the cabinet. Spice?...utensils?..food?..ect?..ect?.

Since I have recently dedicated a drawer near my prep area to spices..

Mental note:  This was one of the smartest things I have done in my kitchen.  I saves steps time and makes putting spices back up so much more easy. I also added to this drawer a set of long handled measuring spoons that will reach in to every jar easily.

No not all jars are the same size or type however they all fit and I can see what I have at a glance.  BIG TIME SAVER!

Now back to the cabinet.
Spices are taken care of so I elected to use the cabinet for utensils that I use however not every day and various kitchen items that fall under the same category.
To make it all easy to find I added labels to the label holders on the drawer to indicate what was in it.  Yes this was tedious...and I kid you not I had to hang in there to finish.  I struggled with this part of the project however it was worth the effort.  Every thing can be found at a glace.
Here is the theory on the labels :
Not what the item is but what the item does.  Ex.  There is a drawer dedicated to "Grate"  If it grates it is in the drawer...One to , "Strain"  If it strains then it is in the drawer.

The empty Drawers I put blank labels on and will use the Ptouch to add them as I find uses for the drawers.

The top has a fruit bowl and basket for mail...and a great spot to rest a cool vintage pyrex refrigerator Dish..  I even added to a lower drawer  Lysol to hit that trash can with and wipes to wipe it down when needed.  Less steps and less time looking for what you need.  A WIN WIN!

Hope you are inspired to organize an area in your kitchen or bath..or closet ..Just bite the bullet and do it.  You will not be sorry!

metal mess to shabby Fab. Metal Cabinet up cycle make over using chalk paint

I have had this little hospital metal  bedside table for a year.  I purchased it last year with a lot of furniture at a yard sale.  It had contact paper on the top that had been spray painted a few times.  Needless to say it stayed.  The interior was dirty and rusty in places and the knobs were wooden ones that have see much better days.  I will not lie to you I put this cabinet off because wow what a lot of work to undo all that was done to it.  Then it hit me I am going to try to undo all of this so that I can work twice as hard to distress it again.
NAWwww.
The contact paper was not going any where it was stuck and sealed with two coats or more of spray paint.  The knobs came off, I have been stashing a set with it to replace them, and the rubber feet were pried off.  I had a set of round caps that fit in the holes of each foot problem solved.  I resorted to Annie Sloan Chalk paint Coca. I needed adhesion and this paint delivers.  Every time I purchase that pricey stuff I remind myself it is worth with a project like this.  The interior was also an easy fix.  I had some vintage sheet music and Modge Podge.

I Love the results!  Nope this is not a perfect cabinet.....

However what charm! It has stood the test of time.  It has been moved from storage building to storage building and luckily was not Discarded.

Mental note on the knobs....

These were purchased from Pier One .  They have wonderful designs in hardware however I am not impressed with the mounting screw.  It is long and hard to keep tight and runs through the ceramic knob itself.
Once I had  the nut on the back of the screw close to the cabinet I applied some E6000 Glue and snugged it up.  Not too tight that screw runs through the knob and too tight may break the ceramic.  I then took the dremel with cutting disk and cut the excess off after the glue set overnight.   I have found with the cutting disk on the dremel the cut is smooth.  You can use the disk to remove any burrs.  So if you accidentally run your arm across the screw reaching in it will not cut you.

I am glad that you stopped by!

Did I say thank you ? Metal military Cabinet upcycle

Craft room ready and did I say thank you ?

I have a true friend and I love love it when she picks something up and decides she does not want to tackle it.  Her words "I just couldn't face it!".  So the awesome cabinet with so much potential: Handy Hubby and I  faced.  Here is a before:

Nope a better picture will not improve this.  This is a hoarder's  craft room's dream.  Wow all those wonderful drawers.  So Handy took a hammer to it. The back was in rough shape, a few drawers would not slide easily and every big ding had to be improved. Meanwhile back at the woman cave...  Paint inventory...black and red..that works and they are Rust-oleum.  I did splurge on some quick drying Rust-oleum primer designed to inhibit the growth of rust. Some major sweating in the SC humidity and a lot of elbow grease, the cabinet is craft room ready.  Meaning that it is not perfect I would have been a lot more picky if it were going in a booth but for me it is perfect...

Final steps:  Printing the number inserts.  Used business cards with an Avery down load and cut them down to size.
